Product Description
Constantine I 307-337. Solidus 20 mm 324 Thessalonica. Head of Constantine to right, wearing plain Hellenistic-style diadem, gaze uplifted / CONSTANTINVS AVG Victory seated left, holding cornucopiae and Victory on globe, mintmark SMTSE. RIC 131; GOLD, nearly extremely fine, scratch on obv.
This - for Roman coinage standards - considerably innovative style of depiction is dating back to 324 AD, and recalls royal Hellenistic portraits looking upward in an attitude of prayer. The shift from the militaristically inspired depiction with laurel wreath to the Hellenistic diadem emphasized the royal impetus of the emperor`s depiction and is another feature that was transfered from the Hellenistic coinage.
Eusebius interpreted the attitude of prayer depiction as an expression of the emperor`s divinely inspired faith.
