The Queen of the Netherlands, born in The Hague in 1880, could not prevent the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg from seceding from the Netherlands because it refused to recognize a female head of state. Wilhelmina became a symbol of the Dutch resistance against Hitler's German terror regime when she formed a government in exile in England.
